How To Build A Team Of Freelance Mercenaries

So you've taken a freelance job, but you bring a limited set of skills to the party. Sometimes it requires you to build a team to get the job done.

This is not like getting together with your lab partner on a science project. This is a job. This is a business transaction between you and others.
  • Be professional.
  • Make sure the creative brief is clear. Know exactly what your client wants and needs, so you can be clear on instructing your team.
  • Hire reliable people. Get references, if needed. Know their skill levels. This is no time to hire amateur programmers to help you build an extensive web site.
  • Don't screw with their money. Pay them when you promise, even if it's out of your own pocket.
I've seen long-time friendships end. I've seen entire teams sue each other. It all started because:
  • The communication was poor
  • Someone lied about their expertise and/or failed to deliver
  • The money was funny
So if you sign on, make sure it's a buttoned-up crew. Sometimes the freelance job is not worth the money. Everyone must do their part. No one is expendable.
