Want The Job? Timing Is Everything.
Like so many out there, a friend of mine was recently laid off and was looking for a new account executive position. I said I would keep my eyes open.
A headhunter contacted me about a position she was perfect for and I forwarded the email to her.
She didn't see the email until three days later. By then, the job was filled.
If you are actively looking for a position, you have to check with your sources regularly.
Check your emails, networking groups, and job sites daily.
Send your personal contacts a monthly reminder, at least. (A little more often only with their permission - don't be a stalker.)
Opportunity is about being top-of-mind. Of course, I knew of other job-seekers, but she was the first person I thought of, because I most recently talked to her.
It's about being at the right place at the right time.
Your job search needs to be a scheduled routine – one you keep.
I know you can get depressed sometimes and you don't feel like doing it. That's the day you need to kick yourself in the ass and do it anyway. You'll be kicking yourself later for missing the job opportunity. And your contact may want to kick your ass for making them look bad for recommending you.
Timing is everything.
