Employment Blues Take The Stage

I got an invite to an event back in Detroit for a story slam competition.

No one can talk the bad job or unemployment blues like Detroit right now (big reason why I had to leave). I would love to go to the event and I'm hoping these tales will offer something uplifting in the end.
  • People will see solutions to help them with their own problems.
  • They will be able to laugh at themselves.
  • You'll see that your problems could be worse through the eyes of another.
My worst day on the job? Christmas Eve 1993. I was new at an Ann Arbor, MI agency. Our client was in downtown Detroit, so I was based there.  I had no vacation days and had to work. In fact, there were only two of us in the office. I hated that job. My supervisor was bitchier than usual that day, so I finished up some Christmas shopping at lunch to get away from the place. When I returned, my supervisor was suspiciously absent and the company president was there.

He told me that they hired me based on their need to staff up for new business they had hoped to get.

They didn't get it.

They laid me off that day. Merry Christmas.

The uplifting point? My old job took me back two months later. Never burn bridges.
