Don't Create Reward Programs Without Real Rewards.
I belong to my share of reward programs.

I have more key tags than keys.
In short, my spending habits can be tracked as tightly as a convict with an ankle bracelet. So last week, I got a text message that lets me save up to 40 percent off at an area store. So it looks like I'm going shopping. Then I see the same offer in the newspaper – WTH?
By signing up for this special shoppers program, I basically got an "exclusive" 30-minute head start over the rest of Chicago.
Suddenly I don't feel so special anymore.
Today's lesson:
If you are creating a shopper rewards program, make the shopper feel special. It's that simple. Reward them for allowing you to communicate with them and provide them with incentives no one else can get. That gives others the incentive to want to be a part of it too.
Okay, I still went to the sale – 40 percent off is 40 percent off, but I opted out of the text messages. Why clutter up my phone, when I can catch it in the papers?
And that's another thing – When you lose that loyalty, you are going to have to work so much harder to get it back.
