When I was job hunting as a student and a recent grad, my portfolio wasn't filled with comps of well-known brands, with the exception of a Speedo campaign (I was on the swim team in college). If you choose the big brands, sometimes you risk having your work pale in comparison to what's is already out there. Or you may be seen as an advertising genius by creating something that is better than the brand's current work. (I chose to play it safe and do the former.)
Here's a recommended conversation starter that's always worked for me – a comp campaign around the most ridiculous, but real, product you can find. It got laughs. It got attention. Best of all, it got me interviews. If you can sell this stuff here, you can sell just about anything:
