Get A Great Crew. Get Great Results.

Volkswagen and their agency Deutsch LA recently posted a blooper reel of "The Force" Super Bowl spot. Outtakes are often funny to check out, but don't always look at multiple takes as multiple mistakes.

I can't speak for the creatives here, but sometimes you come with an idea and that's it: A kid in a Darth Vader Costume tries to use the Force to move things around his house. His dad tricks him and gets the kid to believe he starts the the car with his powers.

The pitch can be that simple. The script may be just as simple. The creatives can dream up a few scenes on paper and flesh out the idea, but sometimes the end product isn't as good when you actually shoot them. A great production crew and editor can help you conceive different ways of shooting scenes and putting them together, so hopefully you'll end up with something better than the original idea.

Thing is, you always want to link yourself with a crew that brings something extra to the table. More important, you want to be open to their suggestions. Don't let arrogance or ego lead you to believe they are stealing the job from you or that your idea is the only good idea. If you hired them for their expertise then let them help you make the job better. We're all working toward the same goal - to make the best work possible. Yes, some work harder and do more than others. Stay in touch with those individuals. You may spend years building your careers together by making each other look good. Most creatives have a short list of production teams they prefer to work with.

So who worked on "The Force?" Look here.
And under that helmet was soap actor Max Page. (Great talent also goes a long way in bringing your work to life.)
