Learn From The Big Names In Games.

Gamification is a funny word that's developed recently, but it's a term you should take seriously. According to Wikipedia, "Gamification is the use of game play mechanics for non-game applications (also known as "funware"), particularly consumer-oriented web and mobile sites, in order to encourage people to adopt the applications. It also strives to encourage users to engage in desired behaviors in connection with the applications."

In this new decade, I hope you still don't think of gamers as a bunch of 30-something nerds living in mom and dad's basement glued to a TV and Xbox. If you're playing Farmville on FB or you play apps on your smart phone, you fall into the category of the casual gamer. And guess what? Marketers love you. And brands are looking for ways to build a relationship with you that's fun and engaging — gamification.

This week, you can check out the big names in games at the Gamification Summit 2011 in  San Francisco, January 20-21. You'll learn from thought-leaders like author Gabe Zichermann (Game-Based Marketing - see my book review post here) and online community expert Amy Jo Kim. The event is sold out, so you are going to have to do a little pay-per-view online streaming on fora.tv.
