Create The Next Go Daddy Campaign

x

I'm not a fan of commercial contests. One big reason is that the results have never been great. We did it at my previous agency. We've all seen other brands do it and the winners have been "OK" at best. Few have created tighter relationships between the brand and consumer. And any amateur who has said, "I can make a better commercial than that," has yet to prove it to me, at least. Yes, I've seen great viral stuff on YouTube, but the majority of them weren't contest entries or winners.

Go Daddy is back with another commercial contest. The great thing about this is that it's open to everyone, from your professional ad guys to students to the wannabees. They are even offering several prize level levels, paying up to $250,000 for a multimedia campaign, consisting of a series of :30 TV spots and :60-:90 online content to pay them off.

Here's where we separate the pros from the average Joes. Your work must be on-air quality, so forget shooting with your iPhone or pocket cam recorder. Can you tell if your idea is a one-off or do-able as a campaign? Your idea must be "edgy, funny and original," with the emphasis on funny. We all know Go Daddy humor:

So as long as you don't get them fined by the FCC, you're in good shape. This would be a great student project. So here's my challenge to you: come up with something smart, funny, and edgy that elevates the Go Daddy brand. Make it memorable. Make it good enough to put in your portfolio, even if you don't win. And you only have until September 30, 2010 to make it period. Get the rules and details at godaddy.com/contest.
