Video Games Live: Music To My Ears
Tweet
I'm watching PBS the other day (and if you aren't watching PBS, you're missing out on some of the most thought-provoking TV out there) and I finally caught Video Games Live . VGL is an interactive symphony, where an orchestra and choir play the scores of some of the biggest video games in history.
A night at the symphony and playing video games seem to be an unlikely pairing for an event — but think about it. Since Space Invaders, video games have been predominately sci-fi based. Sci-fi and orchestral music have gone hand-in-hand since 2001: A Space Odyssey. (So maybe Thurston Howell III and Joe Xbox have more in common than they ever imagined.) As an event, the symphony stepped up their game with, well, games. They eliminated the potential snooze-fest for cultural newbies by adding a level of interactivity and humor.
As someone who creates events, I have to make note of a show that has been touring since 2005 and successfully exposing different audiences to something outside of their comfort zone. It's always great when you reach your target audience. It's amazing when you touch a broader group.
See for yourself why it works: Checkout videogameslive.com for future PBS airings and tour dates for the often sold-out event (Chicago, November 6).
The best way to find inspiration is to open yourself up to new worlds.
