They Took The Plunge.
People who friend me on Facebook know I'm not much into posting. I post a picture every now and then or comment on someone's status. Lately, I've been keeping track of friends who took the plunge — they packed up their things and left Detroit for places they felt were the promise lands (LA, Houston, Boston, Chicago).
Their stories have common threads — they were in the ad industry in Detroit and they lost their jobs. For some it's been over a year and only a few months for others. Some of them have families, the rest still live the single life. Some left for actual job offers. One college friend just took his chances out west, hoping to land a job later.
He did.
In fact, all of them are in the process of starting over at new agencies in new cities.
It hasn't been easy. Some walked away from their houses. One family is still trying to get over the heartache of giving up their dog. I don't think anyone could read their stories and still have a dry eye.
At first, I was amazed about how open they've been on FB. But who can afford a therapist these days? They vent their frustrations on FB, as well as celebrate their triumphs. I've prayed and cheered right along with them.
If you find yourself in a similar situation, maybe it's time to seek out family and friends who are doing something about it. By no means am I condoning reckless behavior, but I find the bravery of my friends to be inspiring. Maybe your FB friends list can lead you to solutions of your own.
It's summer. I can't think of a better time to take the plunge.
