Hazing The Juniors And The Interns

The interns are not here for our entertainment. Who am I kidding? Yes, they are. Sorry kids, but we all have to put up with a little hazing in our early years. It's part of our rite of passage. But I draw the line when hazing dabbles in humiliation.

So I'm on the fence when companies create buzz for themselves by promoting the ridiculous things people do to land a job.

As a candidate, you want to draw attention to yourself. And there are a lot of ways to get creative. Just make it relate to the job and the skills you bring. That's all I ask.  That's all you should ask of yourself. Prove that you're good for the position, not good for a laugh or a YouTube entry. Now if you see the company leaning toward antics more than skills, I wonder if you can expect more of the same if you get the job. Let's say you don't get the job or even an interview. Then I hope you didn't do anything where you left your dignity on their doorstep.

On the other hand, there are competitions I would do just for the experience. The recent Internship King competition also proved there are a lot of companies creating great experiences for their interns. Over 125,000 votes were cast for the the best internship.

Still, in my warped little mind, I can picture some company holding interns hostage in some dark basement forcing them to vote for their company.

This is me and my dog. Not an intern.
