Analytics: Why It's Good To Know Who's Checking You Out.
Do you know who's been checking out your online portfolio? You're doing yourself a disservice if you're not trying to find out. Hopefully, your site host offers an analytics feature. It usually comes with an added fee, but it's worth the investment. In the simplest terms, analytics gives you a report of:
- Who has visited your online portfolio. Analytics give you the IP addresses of your visitors. (You're keeping track of the agencies you've contacted, so you have some idea of who responded, aren't you?)
- What they looked at. A traffic report shows you the navigation path taken by your visitors. If there are samples everyone gravitates to, that's probably representative of your strongest work. If there is an area most seem to avoid, it's the "weak link" (pun intended). Take it out or swap it for something stronger.
- How long they were there. You may be getting some steady traffic, but how long did they stay? If you couldn't keep their interest longer than a minute, they probably won't be interested enough to contact you for an interview. Now if you notice some lingering visitors, there may be some consideration on their part. If they don't contact you in a week or two, follow up. Just don't say anything strange like, "I've been watching you look at my portfolio." In fact, don't let them know you were aware of their presence at all. Just remind them of why you would be perfect for the position. Give them reason to want to take an even closer at you — like an interview.
