Think Again About A Career In Helping Others

I was a communications specialist for the American Red Cross in disaster services. You spend most of your time on the job preparing for moments like Haiti - fundraising, volunteer recruitment and maintaining public awareness. The latter was the most difficult. Unfortunately, there often had to be a disaster to keep ARC top of mind. And I've had my share, dealing with floods in California and the terrorist bombing in Oklahoma.

Speaking of top of mind, I noticed that people have been revisiting my post, The Ad Grad Project: Profiting From Non-Profits — With A Job. Working for non-profits can be fulfilling for communications professionals in many ways. They need people with your skills. A quick perusal of their website revealed these opportunities:
Marketing Intern in NYC
Graphic Design Intern in Detroit

While you're on their site, don't forget to give to Haiti and your local chapter services. If you earmark your money for Haiti, ARC can only spend those funds on Haiti and no where else. Local services tend to suffer now, leaving less funds to help families in your area who may have lost their homes through fire, flood and other disasters. By the way, 92 cents of every dollar given to ARC goes directly to helping those in need.

In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., help someone today. Donate to Haiti and send an equal donation to help your local ARC chapter.

If you don't have the money, donate some time and volunteer.
